My mission is to work collaboratively with teachers and school districts. This mission grows out of an interest to expand the knowledge base and repertoire for teaching literacy in urban contexts. I aim to create long-term partnerships that build trust to discover the undercurrents raising assumptions about literacy; so that when I leave the community, the journey will continue. I enjoy working innovatively with schools and communities over time to help teachers understand their preconceived notions about the written language and to negotiate the language of the home in school. My years of experience as a classroom teacher and professional developer allows me to connect with teachers and students as we journey towards a deeper understanding of the challenges non-dominant language speakers face when learning to read and write.
